• DO I HAVE TO BE A WITCH TO ATTEND?
Not at all! You do not have to be a "real" witch to attend or enjoy Witches Weekend! Our mission is to create an annual gathering to celebrate and embrace your inner witch, no matter your connection to the witchy realms. "Real" Witches, young and old, green or purple, all are welcome! Sometimes, you just want to throw on a witchy-hat and go dancing, sometimes you want to connect with others of like-minds and pick up a new crystal or two. Sometimes you want to get a reading or learn a new skill at one of our exclusive Witchy Workshops. We welcome Witches of all ages, shapes, sizes, ethnicities, beliefs, creeds, and covens!
• WHY HOUGHTON LAKE?
Houghton Lake is a well known hot-spot to enjoy the BEST of Michigan's beautiful summer season! Nestled in the heart of Northern Michigan's Lower Peninsula, this small welcoming town surrounds one of Michigan's largest inland lakes. As a popular historical town, you will find cabins, hotels, resorts, lodging, campgrounds, and vacation rentals all over the lake. With local restaurants, bars, coffee shops, pubs, artisan & gift shops, historical tours, and more! When the Witches come to town, you'll see "Welcome Witches" on just about every sign! Houghton Lake really is a mystical and magical place! We hope you fall under it's spell as well!
• THE WITCH'S CURSE OF PERE CHENEY?
Just a short drive north and you'll hear the stories about the Ghost Town of Pere Cheney and its haunted and "rumored to be cursed" cemetery. It has been said that the town of Pere Cheney disappeared because of a curse placed upon it by a Witch. Soon after they hung the Witch in this very cemetery, diptheria took over the tiny town twice and ultimately forced the remainder of its residents north to Grayling. However, before they moved the town went mad and burned the town down to the ground. The small village has completely disappeared and the hidden cemetery is one of the only remaining places to even prove the town existed at all. To this day the Pere Cheney cemetary only grows a soft and mossy ground cover, no other grass or vegetation grows in the cemetery itself other than the trees and along its perimeter. Those that have visited have reported of small handprints appearing on their vehicle upon returning to it.
In a way, we at Witches Weekend designed this event to honor the Witch in ALL of us! So we honor the Witch of Pere Cheney as well and dance the night away, embracing our Witchy side and making some magical memories! In return, your trip to Witches Weekend supports the many small businesses of Houghton/Higgins Lake during a time when they would not normally have the traffic.
We are in no way encouraging you to visit or seek out the Pere Cheney cemetary, it is located in a very rural area and many advise against it. The roads are not maintained and cell signal is very sparse in the area. If you choose to visit you do so under your own risk! The Pere Cheney cemetery site is listed as #2 of the top 10 Witch Graves of the MidWest.
